Now We're A 4 Piece

The history of Midnight Mob began as a traditional 5 piece band: drums, bass, two guitars and a singer. The first rhythm guitar player, Handsome Eric, lasted a few months before deciding it was too much and there were other things he would rather do.  We rocked as 4 piece for a short time until J5 rolled through becoming the 2nd rhythm guitar player and lead player as well.  At this time we actually released a cover cd called "Delicious Cream" where he can be heard on.  J5 lasted a few months until we realized that he wasn't the right fit and we parted ways. His last show was at a lesbian bar coincidentally which is the same show Spydyr came out to see us but couldn't get in. We rocked out again as a 4 piece for about a year until Spydyr reared his head again and bumped into Catastrophe. Shortly after that Spydyr joined up and coincidentally his first show was at that same lesbian bar. We rocked together and traveled the country as a 5 piece for a number of years until he realized it wasn't for him anymore. Then Spydyr departed once again making Midnight Mob a 4 piece.

We're taking Spydyr's departure as a clear message that Midnight Mob should be a 4 piece.  The tricky part is going forward as a 4 piece after writing and recording a new ep with two guitars in mind. It's definitely is not as easy as I thought. The whole soundscape changes from a playing standpoint and spectator standpoint.  It's very weird at first because you're not used to hearing the band with one less guitar. It becomes really apparent how much space that one guitar filled. At first there was definitely that moment of doubt, can we really pull this off? We had two practices and then did an open mic to test the waters to see what's up.  We video taped it and learned a whole lot of what we needed to work on.  For all aspiring bands out there, video tape as many shows as possible to get the honest truth.

The performance wasn't nearly as bad as we thought but lots of light was shed on what we need to work on.  At first overwhelming, but then it actually became fun and exciting. I guess it kind of felt like starting a new band all over again. It was also a challenge that took a lot of thought regarding my guitar tone and set up in addition to what guitar parts will be played, which parts won't be and which parts will be combined. In addition, to all that I also had to adjust all the muscle memory working the foot pedals in addition to the guitar work. It sounds like a lot of work and it really is, but it's been pretty eye opening.

In order to handle the foot work, guitar work and backing vocals I had to upgrade to a bigger more customizable pedal board. Now it gets a bit techie.  After a bunch of research I got myself a Pedaltrain Pro powered by a Voodoo Lab power supply. This board allowed me to place my footswitch right in the middle front with the most common pedals I use around it.  I also bought a straight stand with a boom swivel at the top, which allows me to place the mic stand more comfortably in front of me without having those long tripod legs getting in the way.  Since I am the only guitar I decided to upgrade a majority of my pedals to boutique pedals. Previously I was using all Boss pedals which at the time was good enough because another guitar was making sound and covering up a lot of guitar sound.  Now I'm completely exposed and everything has to be on point. I upgraded my tremolo to a Strymon Flint, my delay to Earthquaker Devices Dispatch Master and reverb to TC Electronic Hall of Fame. The whammy and Cry Baby wah stayed the same. Then on my rhythm channel I dropped the gain a little and cranked the master.  I also add a tiny bit of reverb as well. All this stuff is played through a Peavey tube head and a Peavey 4x12 cab. I recently tried a 2x12 cab, but it really doesn't cut it, not a fan.

This little blog actually became way more in depth than I thought.  I wrote it because it's been probably the most common question recently and I thought why not put it all out there.  Honestly it's been really challenging but really fun. We have done 2 actual shows as a 4 piece and we have gotten great feedback, which makes all this work worthwhile and reassuring.  This Saturday 11/21 in Philadelphia at Bull Shooters Saloon will be my first show with all my new gear and I'm pretty excited about using it. It's going to take some time to get used to all the changes, but totally well worth it.

We Need Your Help!

Our new EP is coming out December 2015 and we will be updating our content with a new video & new band photos, this time as a four piece. If you have any connections to any sort of blog, magazine, music festival, radio show, music venue, charity event anything music related that we can promote Midnight Mob through then please feel free to speak on our behalf or forward us any contact information and we'll take care of the rest. We really need as much help as humanly possible to help promote this new ep to get Midnight Mob to the next level.  There is no way we can do this without you. Your help can be as minimal as a competition you heard on the radio that you think we would benefit from. Maybe your town has a local festival with live music or your local brewing company has an annual festival or the local paper is looking to do a write up on bands. Maybe you can introduce us to some local bands in your area that you think we would be a good fit with.  Whatever you can do is hugely appreciated.  All opinions & suggestions are welcome. Thank you so much!

New EP, Honest Brutal Glorious & Gramercy Show NYC

I can't believe it we can finally say that the new ep is completely recorded & mixed. Not only that, the mixes were officially forwarded to Dave Collins who is doing the mastering today. Dave Collins' resume includes Soundgarden - Superunknown, Alkaline Trio - Crimson, Linkin Park - Minutes to Midnight, Alce Cooper, Black Sabbath etc...  We're really excited to have him lend his talents to our new ep.

The official release is going to be Saturday 12/5/15. On this day you'll find it available on all major download sites and hardcopies can be purchased through our store at www.MidnightMobFans.com/shop. We will be celebrating this release with a show at Gramercy Theatre, NYC with The Dirty Pearls & Dead Rocking Horse. Those who pledged in our pledgemusic campaign will be receiving the early release of the new material towards the end of October.

Also if you are interested in attending the cd release party you can for $15, tix can be purchased through www.MidnightMobFans.com/shop. The event is also 16+ & we have a 9pm set time. We are offering discount tickets to our mailing list subscribers so sign up and take advantage.  We hope you can make it to the show it's going to be sick!

Spydyr's Farewell

Hello friends, family, moblins etc etc…

I'm writing this message to inform you all that after 5 1/2 years of Mob service that I am stepping down as Rhythm guitarist.  Don't worry… this is all a personal decision for me to move on and try other things.  Some of you might be wondering if there was fighting, differences and any other negative rumors that would spread in this situation…. THAT COULDN'T BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH… there is no animosity or cynicism being held towards anyone in the Mob.  I love my bandmates like family and they have been just that for the past 5 1/2 years.  Of course there is always ups and downs but it's the ups that will stick with me.  I've had a hell of an experience that most cant say they have done with their life but now it is time for me to move on to other endeavors. MIDNIGHT MOB IS MY FAMILY AND FOREVER WILL REMAIN THAT! It's time to open a new just as positive chapter in my life! To all my friends, family, fans, moblins…. I can go on and on, thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the love and support over the years, thats something I will never forget! And to my brothers and sisters; Blackey, Carly, Mickey and Beatz… I love you all and will continue to push and support you no matter what and wish you all the best.  One final word to everyone: I promise… I PROMISE you have NOT seen the last ME!! That is for sure.

Love you all and to the new chapter,

Salvatore Spydyr Manteria

This site has our official mailing list form for those who want to receive our newsletters and get all sorts of freebies and exclusives.  Also accessible is our tour calendar and also is the return of our question and answer module.  This was an extremely popular feature we used to have but we had to put it aside when changed from fanbridge to get response.  Now it's back and you can ask us quesitons or make comments. We will answer your questions and reply to your comments.  Ask us whatever you want we willl have an answer for everything and anything.  When we used to do this it was so much fun because some of the questions were so off the wall and we really had to get creative with our answers.

When you have a moment visit www.MidnightMobFans.com pick up a free mp3, check our tour dates and ask us a question! We hope to hear from you & hopefully we'll get to meet at one of our shows.

New EP Update

This new ep has been quite the adventure, but we can honestly and excitedly say it is very close to an end. All songs are recorded except the chorus of one song, which is the song Blackey has been dreading the most.  What ended up happening  was that when it came time to do this one song her vocal chords were giving her problems again.  Her doctor gave her a choice to get a shot in the neck that would be very costly but would do the trick and get her voice back in top working order. Blackey decided to take the shot because she didn't want to deliver anything sub par. As a result the ep will be slightly delayed.  Our initial plan was to have the hard copy of the ep available early September in time for our tour to AL and back, but unfortunately it won't be.

For those of you that pledged you will still be able to download the ep in September, but the hard copy won't be available until late September early October. In order to give Blackey a little more time to complete the last song we will be making the pledge downloads available weekly.  We will be releasing two songs a week and are keeping the pledge campaign open until the final two downloads are released.

All those that do not pledge by the deadline you will be able to purchase the ep when it is officially released in December.  At that time it will be out on all download platforms and the hard copies will be available through our official store.  There is still time to get the material during it's pre released phase & it's only $5 for six tracks.  Our closest circle of people have been hearing the more completed mixes and we're getting some awesome feedback. Can't wait for you all to hear it!

Tour Dates

It's been awhile since we attacked the wonderful United States. It's amazing that the last time we were steadily out there was summer 2013.  Those were the last dates with original drummer Catastrophe. So much has changed since then. After tons of frustration & dissappointment we stumbled across Chris Beatz and adopted him mid 2014. Beatz has elevated our musical abilities to mountainous proportions and we did a quick tour August 2014 to test the waters, which was hugely successful.  Late 2014 was finishing off songs for the new ep & January 2015 we bagan recording. Unfortunately we had a 2 month delay due to Blackey's voice. We have been bombarded with questions from all over the country asking when we're coming around again. Thank you so much for the enthusiasm, support and patience.  This is the stuff that keeps fuel in the tank.  You have no idea how much your energy affects us.

So when are we coming out?  We have talked about this for the past few months because we're itching to get out there and see all your smiling faces again.  This new ep is our ball n chain.  We're not going anywhere until we have physical copies in our hands & we also want all of you to have some time to familiarize yourself with the new material so at the shows we can hear you loud and proud.  The new ep is scheduled to be out for download mid July & we're planning to go out for a few weeks September 2015. It gets better though. We have been in touch with our CA posse which includes Faster Pussycat and we're looking to come to Los Angeles for 4 or 5 shows in either October or November.

That's all we got for now. This summer is looking pretty quiet at the moment. Most likely we'll do a random weekend hear and there 5 hour radious from NYC, but nothing extensive. We're pumped and hope to see you out there!

Peace, Love, Swag N Roll...

New EP Update

Blackey has made her return to the recording studio a few days ago. Before going on vocal rest she was able to do some recording and now she's finally able to build on that. Currently we're scheduled to have the EP available for full download mid July.  In the meantime we have released 3 instrumentals for download through our PledgeMusic Campaign so you can at least hear what the ep sounds like. There are 3 other new instrumental tracks that will also be made for download soon.  We will be doing live acoustic versions of the 6 new songs too so you all can get an idea of what the music sounds like with some vocals. These acoustic versions will be available through our PledgeMusic Campaign so if you want to check them out visit the site and make a small pledge.

Recently we have been able to showcase our reworked acoustic versions of our older material and they have gotten some great feedback.  We have had mulitple requests to record the reworked versions.  So it looks like we're going to do it! We're not sure how many acoustic versions we're going to record maybe 5 or 6. Right now we're thinking of releasing these for free to anyone who pledged our PledgeMusic Campaign.  If you haven't pledged yet there's still time.  Just visit PledgeMusic.com/MidnightMob.

Thanks for all the support and get ready for some new material right around the corner!

New Mailing List Only Website

Hey everyone! We have been talking it over and it looks like we're going to create a subscriber only website.  So here's the idea.. You will need a password to access the site, which will be emailed out to our subscribers.  The site will include a ton of downloadable content such as mp3's, posters, lyric sheets, song sheets and other artwork. We have been trying to find a way to get our demos, alternate versions, instrumentals, lost tracks and experimental stuff out there for our biggest supporters.  This site will also be interactive. You will be able to leave comments, ask questions & we'll get some convo going.

Another sweet perk is that there will be an exclusive store.  This store will have all sorts of handmade exclusive midnight mob merchandise, discounted ticket sales, equipment we want to part with and other personal items only found on this site. All this stuff will be in addition to our video footage we have taken over the past couple of years.

We are really excited about this site and hoping to get it going sometime mid to late June. Stay tuned!

What is CD Baby? How do digital music sales work?

This post for all those not in bands and those in bands but have not released any material yet.

The mp3 download has now replaced the compact disc just like the compact disc replaced cassettes.  As techonology advances stuff gets smaller and more and more intangible. For music collector this means no more walking the aisles of your favorite music store thumbing through the new releases, imports, singles, box sets, talking to snobby employees etc... Now it's more point and click with a mouse without the hassle of driving somewhere and clumsily removing shrink wrap with sticky labels.  Then the mp3 can be neatly added to your ipod or other mp3 device. How great is that! No more carrying cd binders or losing cd's under your car seat. Collectors argue that part of the ritual is the dewrapping to eventually pull out the booklet and really check out your new purchase in all its artistic glory.

At this time at least we have the best of both worlds somewhat.  The big difference really is that instead if going to your readily available giant music retailer to pick up a cd now you have to search for a small mom & pop which consists of 99% used cd's with limited inventory. There's always the internet also to shop for a physical cd but it's really not comparable to being at the store.  In summary the mp3 is covenient, fast, easy, practical, flexible and inexpensive for consumers.  The cd is bulky, tangible and collectible.  So what does this all mean for indie bands and their fans?

The best thing ever for bands that has happened is mp3 downloads.  Itunes has replaced Tower Records & Virgin Records.  For the first time any band can get their music in the store alongside major label acts, which is awesome.  What sucks for indie bands is that Itunes, Amazon & all other major download suppliers basically takes all the profits. The artist has zero control on how much Itunes sell your music for and what percentage the artist then receives. We have seen statements where we have sold hundreds of downloads and received 1 cent for each download. If we were a platinum selling artist that type of profit doesn't matter because we would be making all our money on guarantees, merchandise, endorsements etc... But for an indie band making it by one person at a time an extra couple hundred of dollars goes a long way.  Three dollars really doesn't cut it.

An indie band gets there music onto Itunes by submitting through CD Baby, Tunecore and a number of other companies.  These sites are where the indie artist can make some money to invest back into their band. What happens behind the scenes is this: a band opens up an account with cd baby/tunecore then pays a fee to upload an album/single, the band then sets price & keeps 85%-100% of the profits pending which service you choose.  At this point there's the option to have their music on Itunes, Rhapsody, Amazon, Spotify and all those other sites except Pandora you have to go to them separately. So each band is now faced with the question: Do we keep the music only available at cd baby where we can make some money or do we put it out to a million other popular outlets for exposure where we won't make any money. An indie will always take the hit for exposure because in the long run it may turn into money by hopefully having your name become more and more known, therefore, leading to some great opportunities.

When you're on the internet and you run into an unknown indie band whose music moves you take moment to see if they are available on cd baby or tunecore.  You'll pay pretty much the same maybe a few pennies difference but the band will see so much more in their pockets for all their hard work.  This money will help them to get out on tour, put out more material or maybe a new video. At the same time if you prefer Itunes it's totally cool. We appreciate all the love and the fact that you take the extra step to play us at the gym in the car or when you need a pick me up is more than enough. You can choose to put your money anywhere and you're using it to spread our name which is amazing. Thank you so much and we'll see you on tour!

Blackey On Vocal Rest

If you aren't aware we're in the middle of recording our brand new ep, which at this point will have 6 tracks. If you dig the rock stylings of Danzig, Queens of the Stoneage, Clutch, Distillers & Social Distortion then this ep is for you.  From out of the gate with this recording we had issues.  Our initial recording schedule included having drums tracked before Christmas, but Beatz got struck down hard with the flu, which postponed everything two weeks.  After that though bass & guitars went down smoothly, but took more sessions than we initially planned on, more sessions in a good way though.  The additional recording had nothing to do with poor performance if anything it was the total opposite.  There were so many awesome ideas being thrown out there for each song that it all had to be tracked. With our previous recordings it was generally one day for rhythm guitars and another for leads & melodies. This time around it was 7 hour sessions based around a song and half for guitar leads & melodies.

After guitars it was Blackey's turn to take the stand. Blackey had some reservations & concerns regarding her voice this time around. Something wasn't right. Her breathing was off & the higher notes weren't coming as naturally as usual. Blackey gave it a whirl and quickly realized that she had to seek medical opinion & professional vocal insight. After having throat specialists check her out she learned that her vocal chords were not working together correctly & one was overcompensating for the other, which was causing neck strain which caused her to give out.

On the positive side her condition is completely treatable & requires zero surgery. All she has to do is take some medication & rest her voice as much as possible. You can think of it as an athlete getting a bad sprain. The doctor said for optimal performance to not record for 6-8 weeks which puts her back in the booth around mid May. In the meantime all of the music will be edited and set up for Blackey to throw down & deliver the goods. Originally we were gunning for a pre release in March for those that pledged but it looks like mid June will be the time frame.  In the meantime if you pledge at www.PledgeMusic.com/MidnightMob we will be offering the songs as an instrumental version in April. This will be pretty cool, not only will these versions be only available to those that pledge, but you will really get to hear all of the musical nuances scattered throughout these new tracks.

Any questions feel free to hit us up & in the meantime checkout www.PledgeMusic.com You'll probably find some of your favorite bands on there. Peace!

Midnight Mob + PledgeMusic = MusicUnites.org

In January we embarked into the unknown. We teamed up with PledgeMusic in order to raise funds and work closely with fans on the making of our new ep.  This was our first time doing anything like this and was truly a sink or swim situation.  Probably the most heady experience we ever had, almost more awkward than playing a show for a bunch of people who do not acknowledge even once that you're playing a show. Yes it's happened & more than once.  Gotta love clubs that only like cover bands. Ironically they give you biggest guarantees. Back to what I was talking about. Before we launched this campaign we were talking about incorporating a charity into the mix. We all agreed to donate portion of the money raised if we make our goal.

There was a big debate of who should we donate to? What is the cause that we would like to give back to? Initially we bounced around various charities that support the troops because many of us have family members involved, but then the more we talked about it with others we realized it doesn't really connect with us as much it does with others. Something didn't feel quite right. We took a step back and it was clear we have to do something affiliated music. Music is something we all connect to more intimately, passionately & emotionally than anything else. We all owe music a thank you because it has steered us individually towards a clear positive light filled with the best lasagna rather than waste away in a puddle on the saddest block in the greyest part of town.

Culture really underestimates & undervalues the power of music. It has saved so many lives from depression, addiction, indecision and suicide.  Blackey's life went from troubled youth of drugs & alcohol depencies to sober, respected musician, role model and focused entreprenuer. Getting involved with music opens people up to so many other creative outlets such as art, photography, writing, clothing design, web design and it's endless really. Once your brain clicks in the creative realm the world is your giant canvas to etch your personality into.

For these reasons we had to give back to music.  After researching a bunch of charities we settled on MusicUnites.org. This organization focuses getting music into the reach of youth that in most situations may not be able to experience the joy of an instrument or a bond with another fellow musician.  If you would like to give to this charity you can do so through www.PledgeMusic.com/MidnightMob. We will be donating 15% of your pledge to this charity. Your minimal pledge of $5 will also give you a download of our new ep scheduled to be released this summer.  If you would like to just donate to the charity you can visit www.MusicUnites.org.

Stay tuned for new tunes, tour dates and as always Peace, Love, Swag N Roll...

Thank You!

Thank you so much to all those who pledged in our PledgeMusic campaign & making it a success!  You're support and love have kept us going all these years.  The past year and a half have been our darkest years beginning with totaling our van, losing our trailer, losing a founding member and being forced to cancel shows due to family illness.  We were close to a year without a drummer, but we were able to hang in there and keep it going.

Thank you to all those that have never hesitated to offer words of kindness and inspiration. As you mature as a band you begin to realize how instrumental your fans are to your craft.  They become another part of the equation along with the instruments & melodies.  We discovered early on in our travels that we were a band that found it easy to connect with those we meet at our shows. We've been kicked out of countless venues at closing time because we're always hanging out with people just talking, relating or enjoying a drink with a perfect stranger.

Blackey changed her whole life around a year ago due to a letter from a fan.  That one letter from a fan allowed her to see what's really important and how her words could affect someone like herself.  Blackey went cold sober and never looked back.  Her whole outlook on life changed & her crooked path now became clearer & straighter. Her lyrics for this ep draw from this inspiration she received over the past year.

It was important for us to find a way to make the new ep with our fans.  We've had a few setbacks, but soon we'll have some instrumentals which will hopefully help you throw some song titles, album titles & art ideas around. We are through the moon with the new music and hands down it's our best.  Everything happens for a reason and we can't help to think that it was all supposed to go down this way. If anyone out there is reading this and you're hitting a roadblock with something in your life just keep it positive put your head down & barrell through it.  Someone will be on the otherside to hold you up.

Peace!
